Amid a debate about free speech in the Internet era, UCLA announced Friday that it would not proceed with any investigation or disciplinary action against the student who produced a controversial online video in which she complained about Asian students’ behavior and crudely mimicked Asian languages.
“While we were appalled and offended by the sentiments expressed in the video, we have uncovered no facts to lead us to believe the student code of conduct was violated. The campus has no intention of pursuing the matter further,” UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton said in a telephone interview Friday.

The UCLA student whose anti-Asian video rant garnered millions of views online and intense backlash appears to have had aspirations of creating similar videos as part of a blog.
Shortly after the earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan on Friday, Alexandra Wallace, 20, posted a three-minute video on YouTube in which she mocked Asian languages and expressed her annoyance with Asian students talking loudly in the library on their cell phones, including those calling Japan to check on relatives after the deadly tsunami.
After the backlash, Wallace issued an apology Monday, saying she “cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did.”

Wallace contacted university police early Sunday evening after receiving numerous death threats via e-mail and phone, said UCPD spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.
Police advised her to take a number of precautions and are currently working to ensure her safety, Greenstein said.
“If she’s received a death threat, I find that as deplorable as her original YouTube video. If this is the response of students on campus, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students.
Within three days, the video provoked a tremendous response, both inside and outside the UCLA community.
Speaking Sunday night, a university spokesman called the video “repugnant.”
